Robertsport, Liberia, is a surfer's paradise for its impressive (and practically empty) left-hand breaks. You'll primarily share the waves in this little West African fishing village with surf-loving local youth. Whether you're a seasoned surfer or a novice looking for an exhilarating experience, Robertsport offers an abundance of surf spots, thrilling waves, and a vibrant surf culture. Here's your expanded guide to ensure you make the most of your surf trip to this hidden gem on the West African coast.

Best Time to Surf

Liberia's climate remains consistently hot and tropical, with two distinct seasons. The rainy season spans from May to October, while the dry season spans from November to April. Heavy rainfall occurs throughout the rainy season, with daily rain showers. Year-round, daily temperatures vary between 26 and 32 degrees Celsius (79 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit).

Swells in Robertsport tend to be SSW from the South Atlantic. They are more frequent from April to October, with October statistically bringing the most consistent wavews For guaranteed swells, organize a trip for July-August and October, but if you're more interested in good weather (less rain) pick March-April. If you are a beginner and happy to spend some time in the outskirts of Monrovia, the beach break in front of Kendeja Hotel is perfect for learning, especially during the month of December.

The good news is that you can always find a wave to surf, especially if you are willing to move between Paynesville on the outskirts of Monrovia and Robertsport. No matter when you plan your visit, you're in for an unforgettable surfing experience.

Where to Get a Surfboard and Lesson

The Robertsport Surf Club is your go-to place for surfboard rentals. For $10, you can rent a board, and for $20, you'll get both a board and a lesson combo. With over 12 ISA-trained surf instructors in Robertsport, you will be in good hands. The staff at the club tell you which surf spot is working and how to get there.

Surf Guides to Show You the Breaks

There are several friendly surf guides in Robertsport who are more than happy to show you the breaks and the best place to sit to catch the perfect waves. Check-in at the Robertsport Surf Club to find out who is available on any given day. Before you head out, tell the team at the Robertsport Surfclub that you'd like to try their coconut pie and you'll be welcome back after your epic session to hot french pressed coffee and Ester's famous coconut pie pockets.

Surfing Spots in Robertsport

When it comes to surfing spots in Robertsport, there are plenty of options. Now, let's explore the expanded list of surf spots with left-handed breaks:

  1. Fisherman's Point

Known for having the longest wave in Robertsport, Fishermans is a favourite among locals and tourists. Its name reflects the location on a beach where fishermen park their boats. This long, rolling wave ranges from 2-4 feet. Fisherman's is where local children often learn to surf due to the smaller waves and sandy bottom. Every once in a while, when a large swell wraps in the right direction, even seasoned surfers can enjoy perfect barrels at this spot.

  1. Inner Cottons

Named after an enormous cotton tree towering above the beach, Inner Cottons is a fantastic and easily accessible surfing spot. Located right outside Nana's Lodge, this popular spot doesn't require venturing far out, making it a favorite among locals and tourists. With some care and practice, surfers can jump right off the rocks into the water to catch the waves. Daily, local youth gather at this stop, catching a wave and running along the beach to launch off the rocks back into the fun.

  1. Outer Cottons

A bit further out compared to Inner Cottons, Outer Cottons lives up to its name. This challenging point break is worth the paddle on a good day. With waves typically ranging from 3-5 feet and occasionally very hollow, Outer Cottons is reserved for experienced surfers seeking a greater challenge. When the swell is working for this spot, the two sections of Inner Cottons and Outer Cottons connect into a wave that can run for half a mile. In fact, on rare occasions, the wave connects to Fishermans, a mile away.

  1. Shipwreck

When the more popular spots like Cottons are quiet, surfers head southwest to Shipwreck. While it may not boast the best waves compared to Cottons, it's a reliable spot for a good, fun wave, and you're sure to find some sizable waves here.

  1. Locos/El Loco

A left break with very consistent conditions, Locos is another great surfing spot in Robertsport. Locos faces southwest, so it is a bit exposed to the wind. This spot is about a half-hour walk from accommodations in Robertsport.

  1. Jayagi

Situated in the farthest southwest of Robertsport, Jayagi is about a 2-hour walk southwest of Robertsport Surf Club. This spot can be even better than Shipwreck, closer to a point break. A favourite among locals and tourists, Jayagi promises a truly memorable surfing experience.
